ABOUT STEVEN SPURRIER

From being inspired by a glass of Cockburn 1908 Vintage Port at thirteen years old, Steven joined London’s oldest wine merchant in 1964; he went on to buy a wine shop in Paris and then opened L’Academie du Vin, France’s first private wine school in 1973.
In 1976 Steven organised what became known as the Judgement of Paris, an historic blind tasting between wines from California and France. Nine of the best tasters in France placed Californian wines, both white and red, above the greatest French wines, changing the wine world forever.

In the 1980s he wrote several wine books and co-created the Christie’s Wine Course. In 1988 he returned to the UK to focus on writing and consultancy. He has won several awards, including Le Personalité de l’Année (oenology) 1988 for services to French wine and the Maestro Award in honour of California wine legend André Tchelistcheff (2011).

He is also is president of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust and founded the Wine Society of India.

In 2017 he was named Decanter Man of the Year and has recently planted a vineyard in Dorset to produce sparkling wine.
Just some of the roles Steven Spurrier has taken on and excelled at over his wine career have been those of critic, journalist, buyer, entrepreneur, wine guide, vintner, visionary, mentor, restaurateur, author, educator, judge, communicator and consultant.
But it wasn’t just what Spurrier did that counted. It was also how he did it – in his case with characteristic flair, style and élan.
